When вЂњwriting-to-learnвЂќ is the primary objective of your assignment, a rubric is recommended that focuses more on the technical merit of the studentвЂ™s content and less on the grammar and mechanics. The assessment of student writing in engineering courses can vary between simpler analytic rubrics to more complex, holistic rubrics. Additionally, the teaching of writing is an entire discipline of study with its own theories and practices that may not be accessible to engineering educators. However, engineering instructors and TAs often struggle to incorporate writing into engineering classes due to a variety of challenges, including class size and the amount of time it takes to grade writing assignments. Writing in engineering courses gives students practice in articulating engineering concepts to different audiences and in engaging with technical communication genres. Writing exercises can be used in engineering courses to promote the deeper learning of technical material and build studentsвЂ™ writing skills.

The primary focus here is on вЂњwriting to learnвЂќ assignments, which leverage writing to improve studentsвЂ™ conceptual understanding of technical concepts. If you teach writing, think about what you look for in your writers. Parents are also able to easily see (and hopefully understand more completely) where their child is at as a writer and what they can work on.ДЄnd letвЂ™s not forget the time I saved with using rubrics! I donвЂ™t feel the need to write as much on each paper because the rubric explains a lot of it. I also found that I was able to set goals more easily for my students because it was easier to see where they didnвЂ™t quite meet my expectations. When I started using rubrics I found that my grading was more fair and consistent. Using rubrics not only assisted me in communicating these strengths and areas of improvement, but it also allowed me to celebrate a studentвЂ™s gifts as a writer. They are often overlooked as вЂњbad writersвЂќ just because their writing looksВ so bad. On the flip side, you may have a student with horribleВ developing handwriting and complete lack of conventions (including most words spelled incorrectly), but they have amazing voice or interesting ideas. Some kids are excellent with their conventions/neatness which sometimes led me to give them a better grade even if the actual writing wasnвЂ™t that spectacular. I realized early on that there isnвЂ™t just вЂњgood writingвЂќ and вЂњnot so good writingвЂќ.

IвЂ™ve been teaching first grade for 6 years now, so IвЂ™ve read a lot of student writing! IвЂ™ve experienced so many different levels of writing and writing styles.

Making/using rubrics helps me to really think about what I expect from my students as writers. Rubrics also set up my expectations to help me, my students and parents see what I am looking for. I like to use writing rubrics because they help me to be consistent when grading student writing. I donвЂ™t claim to be an expert by any means, but I do love using them! Why I Like To Use Writing Rubrics Rubrics lay out expectations of an assignment by listing criteria and levels of quality on a scale.ДЇor example, on a writing rubric the criteria may be вЂњUses punctuation accuratelyвЂќ or вЂњBegins with capital letter.вЂќ I think of a rubric as a performance scoring guide.
